The OAT Probe in AircraftJust so we are clear, the OAT probe we refer to in this article, is the Outside Air Temperature (OAT) probe that is installed on an aircraft.

The OAT probes for aircraft are installed externally of the aircraft. The OAT probe is not installed inside the fuselage or in the cabin air scoops; and definitely not inside the cowling. To receive an accurate air temperature reading, the EGT Probes must be installed such that the tip is outside the aircraft.

Comparing EDM 760 and EDM 790 SystemEDM 760 and EDM 790 are near identical EDM’s. The major difference being that EDM 790 is equipped with a full colour TFT screen. Both Engine Data Monitors are manufactured by J.P.I - World leader in EDM systems.

EDM 760 and JPI EDM 790 provide the pilots with real time information on the status and health of the aircraft engine. They constantly monitor the health of the aircraft engine and any red-line events are instantly brought to the pilot’s attention via ... Read more »

Fuel Flow Transducer 231A typical fuel flow transducer or any flow transducer for that matter, is used to measure flow of a liquid through a pipeline. You’ve seen them used at gas stations, vehicles with digital fuel meters, gas pipe lines, industries and so forth.

Different models of fuel flow transducer are available depending on the density and viscosity of the liquid to be measure.

Here’s how it works in an aircraft; liqui ... Read more »

Benefits of Slim-Line™ InstrumentsInstead of a big, round and chunky piece of dial that display one single piece of data in an analog format, a slim-line instrument, displays the same data an intelligent, backlighted LCD digital format and its physical footprint is comparatively tiny.

I’ve been flying my Piper Seneca V ferrying scientists and equipment to all parts of north Canada. This is a 2004 build and last year, I decided to upgrade its avionics. I however did not have the budget to do it all in one go, so; I decided to do it piece-meal.

I would plan for it and as and when I accumulated enough to buy a particular Slimline Instruments manufactured by J.P. I, I ... Read more »

The Classic Scanner and its benefitsEvery aircraft pilot needs to have real-time temperature data on EGT, TIT, OT, CHT and OAT. These temperature readings are not possible without the humble classic scanner.

When properly installed by a qualified aircraft technician and paired with fast response Aircraft Sensors (like the ones manufactured by J.P. I), the Classic Scanner will display EGT, TIT, CHT, OT, and OAT temperature data.

Manifold Pressure Sensor in AircraftWhat the heck is it, and what are its advantages?

Manifold Pressure (usually referred to as ‘MAP’), is the amount of pressure entering the aircraft engine (or any combustible engine), cylinders.

Manifold pressure is measured in between the throttle valve and the intake manifold of the engine. Now, let us assume the aircraft is parked in the hanger with engines off. In this situation, the MAP displayed will equal pressure at the airport. At sea level, the MAP gauge should display 29.92. The higher the elevation, lesser the pressure.

Now, when the pilot starts the Aircraft Eng ... Read more »

Data Logging in an Aircraft Engine MonitorData logging referees to capture of data. Typically, a data logger or data recorder is an electronic device that records data over time.

Thanks to modern IC-based smart technology, even a small digital ‘smart’ watch is capable of so much more than just displaying the time of the day. Similarly, an Aircraft engine monitor does a lot more than display a bunch of engine data.

Imagine blood pressure machine or a heart monitor machine that not only monitors the patient but also records the data. So that, with a press of a few buttons, a doctor could check if there were any anomalies during the day. The Aircraft engine monito ... Read more »

Installation of EDM 900 System in an AircraftEDM 900 comes in two versions – TSO’d and non-TSO’d (the latter version costs US $1,000 less and is for use in experimental aircraft). Both are manufactured by the California (U.S.A) based, J.P. Instruments – a pioneer in aftermarket flight instruments.

The EDM-900 is basically an improved version of the EDM 800 with many additional features. The reliability and ingenuity of many JPI products are second to none. The EDM-900 monitors the Aircraft Engine Analyzer conditions four ... Read more »

Types of CHT Probes used in AircraftTo begin with, any temperature probe (such as the CHT probe), is a thermocouple type probe.

For the uninitiated, a thermocouple is formed at the joint between two metals. When the joint is heated, a very small voltage measured in millivolts is generated. Higher the temperature, higher the voltage. Also, each metal combination is best suited for a specific temperature range. The type of thermocouple indicates the metal combination. Three types of thermocouple probes are used in aviation EGT, CHT and TIT.

Types of CHT probes:

There are three basic types of CHT probes; J, K and E

J-type CHT Probes are very s ... Read more »
